Saudi National Day Through Different Lenses

Saudi National Day Through Different Lenses
Al Jalees celebrated National Day early on Wednesday September 17th during our monthly event

Al Jalees Culture Club is an organization founded in 2014 that aims to connect people across Riyadh and Jeddah, and create a safe space for sharing stories

As we prepare for the upcoming 95th Saudi National Day, Al Jalees Culture Club decided to explore the holiday from three different perspectives: a child's, an citizen's, and an expat's. Their insights highlight how this day resonates across generations and cultures.

A Child's Joy: Mohammed – 7 year old Student

“I love National Day because we get to wear green and white, and I can paint my face with the flag! Last year, we had a party at school, and everyone sang songs about Saudi Arabia. We had cupcakes with tiny flags on them, and my teacher told us stories about King Abdulaziz and how he made the country one.”

For Mohammed, National Day is a mix of fun, pride, and family bonding. When asked what he loves most, he didn’t hesitate to say it’s the social interaction and festivities. For children like Mohammed, National Day is more than a history lesson; it’s a sensory experience, with colors, music, and festive atmosphere serving as an introduction to understanding a deeper national identity.

A Citizen’s Reflection: Abdulrahman

“When I was young, National Day wasn’t as big as it is today. We would hear about it, but there weren’t the same kinds of public celebrations. Now, the whole country celebrates, and I feel a deep sense of pride seeing how far we’ve come.”

Abdulrahman views National Day as a symbol of personal and national growth. As an adult witnessing the Kingdom’s transformation under Vision 2030, he reflects on the occasion with a sense of responsibility and hope.

“It’s not just a day off. It’s a reminder that we are part of something bigger. My children ask me about the old days, and I tell them: we didn’t have the same opportunities or entertainment, or global exposure. Now, Riyadh hosts concerts, art festivals, and book fairs. We are very proud..”

For Abdulrahman, National Day is a moment to pass down values. He teaches his children the importance of hard work, loyalty, and embracing change while holding onto traditions.

A Foreigner’s Appreciation: Marie

“When I first moved to Riyadh 12 years ago, I didn’t know much about Saudi Arabia’s National Day. But now, it’s one of my favorite times of the year. The pride people feel is inspiring.”

Marie, originally from the United States, has embraced life in Saudi Arabia with curiosity and respect. As a teacher at an international school, she’s seen how National Day brings communities together.

“It’s beautiful. I think National Day promotes inclusivity—it allows foreigners like me to learn and celebrate alongside locals.”

Marie also notes how the celebration has deepened her understanding of Saudi culture beyond stereotypes.

“Before living here, I had many assumptions. But now, I’ve made Saudi friends, visited historical sites like Diriyah, and attended cultural events. National Day reminds me that this country has a rich past and a bold vision for the future.”

Each of these perspectives reveals a different thread in the fabric of Saudi National Day. For a child, it’s about fun and pride. For an adult, it’s about legacy and growth. For a foreigner, it’s about connection and learning.

Part of our members last Wednesday

At Al Jalees Culture Club, we continuously talk about stories—how they shape our worldview and connect us across borders. National Day is one such story, unfolding each year in real time. It reminds us not only of where Saudi Arabia started but also of the diverse voices that now call it home. So this year, whether you're dancing to traditional music, watching fireworks light up Riyadh’s skyline, or simply reading a book about the Kingdom’s history, take a moment to listen to these voices. In them, you’ll hear the true spirit of National Day.

Happy National Day!
و كل عام ووطننا بخير
